It’s not at all surprising when children with mental health symptoms, behavioral concerns or attention difficulties have high histamine responses. Children with neuro-immune based mental health symptoms often have high histamine responses in the body. Neuro-immune disorders often get labeled as ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, OCD, Mood Dysregulation and Learning Disabilities. Because these labels are not a true diagnosis defining root cause, behaviors will greatly improve only when root cause it addressed. Neuro-immune disorders effect the entire immune and neurological system. Its common for children who are struggling with attention, behaviors, anxiety, and learning to also have skin issues, asthma and allergies. Histamine responses are linked to causing the flare ups of skin issues, asthma and allergies.
Many children with neuro-immune based symptoms have a permeable gut (leaky gut) which leads to histamine responses in the body. Leaky gut can lead to food intolerances. Food intolerances trigger histamine production within the body. High histamine responses in the body lead to bedwetting, asthma, ear infections and respiratory infections. Histamine responses can also lead to anger and uncontrollable laughing according to Tami Wiken N.D., CNHP. Anger and out of the ordinary laughing are on the list of symptoms for children who have Autistic like behaviors. When a child has leaking gut, they often also have gut dysbiosis and gut inflammation. Gut issues are directly correlated to mental health and behavioral issues in children. A bulk of the immune system and neurotransmitters are developed in the gut. When the gut does not provide the brain with the proper number of neurotransmitters, the body will have a weakened immune system, disrupted sleep patterns and a weakened detoxification system. According to Dr. Leo Galland M.D. many allergies and histamine responses start in the gut. A pro-biotic could help lower dust and seasonal allergy responses according to Dr. Galland. It can be concluded that, gut repair is a critical step for lowering histamine responses and improving mental health symptoms.
Dr. Galland stated that “something toxic is happening in the body if you have allergies. This is a clue that you need to detox your body.” Many children with neuro-immune based mental health symptoms have heavy metal toxicity that causes a candida overgrowth (yeast), Lyme to settle in the body and co-infections to settle in the body. When metals and toxins hold pathogens in the body, detoxification is crucial. Another common pathogen that children with neuro immune symptoms suffer from his H-Pylori. The H-Pylori bacteria can live in the digestive tract leading to gut and digestion disruptions. The H-Pylori bacterial pathogen can cause histamine responses that leads to hives. When the body is overloaded with pathogens, parasitic infections can begin to grow. When parasitic infections grow the histamine response can also increase. When a child experiences unexplained hives on a regular basis they could have a tape worm infection according to Dr. Todd Watts D.C. (co-founder of microbe formulas). Dr. Christine Schaffner N.D. (of the Sopia Health Institute) reported that high histamine responses can be linked to parasite infections. Treating parasites can lower food allergies and anaphylaxis responses according to Dr. Schaffner. Many children with neuro-immune based mental health symptoms have severe anaphylactic food allergies so treating parasite infections could be critical for improving health and mental health symptoms.
Many children with neuro-immune based mental health symptoms have genetic snips like MTHFR, (genetic abnormalities) where methylation is hindered in the body. When methylation is hindered detoxification will be hindered. Histamines and pathogens exit the body through the detoxification process so if a child is not detoxifying the body will have an overload of pathogens and histamines. When detoxification is an issue a combination of pathogens, vitamin deficiencies, heavy metal toxicity, leaking gut, and dehydration can create unwanted symptoms to occur. Those symptoms will be in the form of histamine overload and mental health disturbances. A histamine overload can become dangerous for some children due to the risk of possible anaphylaxis. Some children with food allergies and food intolerances could develop a histamine intolerance. Children with a histamine intolerance will get hives each time the histamine level is high in the body and will get hives from foods that have histamines in them. Some children may be lacking the enzymes to break down histamine in the body.
According to Dr. Batmanghelidj M.D. (author of “Your bodies many cries for water”) dehydration causes a buildup of histamines in the body. A combination of dehydration, low sodium, and slow methylation in the body will cause histamine levels to stay high in the body, according to Dr. Batmanghelidj. To lower histamine levels the body needs water, cellular energy, gut repair and salt. If a child suffers from chronic hives, skin rashes, chronic bedwetting or asthma they will benefit greatly from a large water intake, a healthy sea salt and gut repair remedies each day. A product called Heathy Salt and natural organic sea salts act as a natural antihistamine. Salt can treat Asthma symptoms instead of a toxic filled inhaler. Its easy to implement salt by putting very small amounts of an organic sea salt into a child’s water bottle each time it is re-filled.
A high histamine response in the body can also be from a magnesium deficiency, low copper and a B6 deficiency according to Morely Robbins, MBA, CHC (An expert on Magnesium). Children on the Autism spectrum and those with ADHD symptoms are often deficient in magnesium, copper and B vitamins so it’s no surprise that they would have a high histamine response. Allergy medications, skin ointments and antihistamines are not treating the route cause issues for the histamine responses. Children with histamine responses would benefit from vitamin C. Vitamin C regulates a normal histamine response in the body. There are histamine receptors in three areas of the body. Those areas can be supported with enough daily Vitamin C supplementation.
H1 receptors are the histamine receptors that create common allergy symptoms like eczema, runny noses and watery eyes. Vitamin C nourishes healthy skin and lowering allergy responses. H2 receptors are the histamine receptors that are in the stomach and create stomach acid output. Vitamin C supports a normal level of acid production and can be used by children who have too much acidity in their stomach or esophagus. H3 receptors are the histamine receptors that are in the brain and create excitability and insomnia. If a child ever became wired and hyper on antihistamines like Benadryl, then Vitamin C could be a safer and more natural option. Vitamin C supports a normal mood and healthy levels of sleep. Tami Wiken N.D., CNHP, reported that vitamin C and turmeric are helpful in lowering histamine responses. Vitamin C supplements are very easy to utilize for children. Organic Turmeric powder is easy to implement during cooking or in smoothies.
Along with Vitamin C, Magnesium, turmeric, water and salt there are many other great natural remedies for lowering the histamine response and treating allergy symptoms. Histaminum is a homeopathic remedy that stops the histamine response and can be helpful with seasonal allergies according to Dr. Elisa Song M.D. (a holistically based pediatrician). Other useful remedies reported by Dr. Song are allium cepa (good for itchy and burning eyes), eufrashia (good for itching), lemon essential oil (good for allergies) and lavender essential oil (lowers inflammation). Dr. Galland M.D, reported that broccoli sprouts or broccoli sprout powder can help the body to be anti-allergy and lower histamine response. He also stated that N- Acetyl-l- Cysteine (NAC) has antihistamine effects and antioxidants help lower allergic reactions. There are many natural and safe remedies to help lower histamine responses in a child’s body. The histamine response is the clue for toxic overload, pathogen overload, dehydration, gut issues and vitamin deficiencies. Those root cause issues can be treated so childhood mental health symptoms and the histamine response will naturally be decreased.
